The Dentice di Frasso Castle in Carovigno, probably of Norman foundation, is located near the historic center of the town, on a promontory that overlooks the entire coastal area. It is characterized by its peculiar triangular shape - assumed during the 16th century - and the presence of fortifications at its vertices: the square tower, the round tower, and finally the lanceolate tower, also known as the "almond-shaped" tower. This latter tower was probably designed under the influence of the famous military architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini, whose presence is attested in Apulia at the end of the 15th century, to oversee the construction of some fortresses.
From the 17th century onwards, as the defensive need diminished, the castle began to take on the characteristics of a noble residence, thanks to the noble families who owned it: among them, the Caputo, Serra, Costaguti, Castaldi, Granafei, and Imperiali families. The rooms were adapted for this purpose by opening doors, windows, and balconies. An example of this is the elegant balcony that dominates the southern facade of the castle, built during the 18th century, using the "gentle" Carovigno limestone, which is soft and easily workable, and whose characteristic light color gives a fascinating glow.
Since 2018, Ets Le Colonne has been managing the Dentice di Frasso Castle in collaboration with the Municipality of Carovigno.
